Conflict, how do we Manage Difficult Situations and People?

2:00 PM CT – 2:30 PM CT

One fact of life we cannot change is that we will always have difficult people and situations in our work environment; but working from home adds another layer to workplace conflict. How do we manage these situations, and are there ways to help alleviate conflict from occurring?

Real life examples could include getting off on the wrong foot with a new coworker – especially during new WFH protocols, unhealthy competition with coworkers, applying for the same in-org-position as a colleague, difficulties managing a new employee without the convenience of in-office culture to help guide expectations, and any other situation that needs healthy confrontation.

In this session we will discuss the Thomas-Kilman Conflict styles, as well as what your response should be in a conflict situation at work, whether with your management or colleagues. After this session, you’ll have several examples to keep in your pocket of what to say in difficult situations, and take control of the way people treat you, your thoughts, and your goals for growth in your work environment.

Join us for this 30 minute session that is part of an entire series meant to help you become a more effective communicator as you work from home!

Getting Started with Oracle and Docker

12:00 PM CT – 1:00 PM CT

Docker is widely embraced in the developer community but isn’t as well known or understood in the database world. Database administrators and developers are beginning to realize how powerful containers are and the speed, flexibility, and portability advantages they offer over virtual guests.

What can be done with Oracle on Docker? Plenty! Create environments for specialized performance testing, confirming and isolating bugs, evaluating environment changes, exploring new features, practicing and perfecting disaster recovery and upgrade procedures, and preparing for certifications. Provision portable test and lab environments, manage software and data separately, and rapidly deploy reference data end users can apply locally with drag-and-drop ease, independent of operating system concerns. Run multiple versions and editions of Oracle on a single system without conflict. Run several databases on an ordinary laptop with resources to spare.

This session is a practical course for those curious about or just starting out with Oracle on Docker. Attendees will learn terminology and understand how containers differ from virtual machines, followed by demonstrations of Docker’s speed and versatility. Explore basic commands and examples for building Oracle on Docker and making container databases visible on a network. Discover how to separate and preserve data, share and distribute database images and data, then how to create new databases in seconds (not an exaggeration). The session closes with advice on customizing container environments and a peek into orchestrated builds for multi-database needs posed by Data Guard and Sharding.

    Uploading Data with APEX

    11:00 AM CT – 12:00 PM CT

Technologies come and go, and while everything has been moving really fast, no matter when you read this: YOU WILL NEED TO UPLOAD data to your databases.

We have a lot of tools, features, APIs and even our own good old scripts for data imports in all the flavors and colors, however, how could APEX help us?

The APEX team, once again, has added a great feature for us. The APEX_DATA_PARSER API.  With it we have limitless possibilities.

I’d like to show you how we could upload data from almost anywhere (web services include) using the new APEX_DATA_PARSER.

We’ll be exploring some real use cases for the API and how we could reduce (at least in a half) the development time for our requirements.

Finally, I’ll be sharing my demo APEX application with some useful samples.

Achieving Extreme Scalability, Availability, Tenancy, and Sovereignty with Sharding

          12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CT

Oracle Sharding is a technology for managing multiple, geographically dispersed databases in a shared-nothing architecture. Sharding is often associated with large, complex databases but that need not be the case. Based on Oracle Partitioning technology, sharding is a component of Oracle’s Maximum Availability Architecture and boasts a rapidly growing user base. Its adoption is a result of the many database challenges it solves, including extreme availability, fault isolation, data tenancy, application response and latency, hybrid cloud deployment, migration, and data sovereignty. In this presentation, learn how Oracle’s sharding technology works, its limits, implementation planning, use cases, and features and enhancements planned in Oracle 20c.

Presenter Sean Scott has been an Oracle DBA for over 25 years and is an Oracle ACE Associate. He is a Principal Consultant for Viscosity North America.

Initiation to Containers for Database Pros

(or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Docker)

            12:00 PM CT – 1:00 PM CT

Containers have been embraced by the developer community, but acceptance and adoption by DBAs is more tepid. That’s understandable but why would anyone want a database that’s stateless and immutable?! I started using Docker under duress and had no idea what I was doing. Since then, I’ve learned that

Docker elegantly addresses many situations faced by DBAs, including:
Rapidly provisioning test and development environments
Interacting with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure databases (including ATP and ADW)
            Preparing environments for performance testing
            Building Gold images
            Exploring new technologies and features
            Discovering and confirming bugs
            Preparing for certification exams

This session is a crash course in Docker covering the terminology, concepts, skills, and practical examples needed to begin using containers to support databases.

One Less Thing For DBAs to Worry About: Automatic Indexing

            12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST

You’re a busy Oracle DBA. Your phone rings. It’s your most troublesome user, once again complaining that her query is running slow. You take a quick look at the execution plan, find a possible choice for a new index to improve its performance, and drop it in place: Problem solved. Or is it? Even an experienced DBA may not immediately realize the impact that new index will have on the performance of dozens of other queries and DML statements.

This session will show how Automatic Indexing (AI) – one of the newest features of Oracle Database 19c – provides an intriguing alternative to relative performance tuning methodologies for index creation. We’ll look at how AIC reacts to a heavy hybrid application workload and then holistically builds, tests, and implements the most appropriate secondary indexes needed to improve database performance.

APEX 20.1 New Features: Inside Out

            12:00 PM CST – 1:00 PM CST

APEX 20.1 continues the evolution of Oracle’s low-code platform.  This release pays particular attention to developer-side features, such as single-click deployment, automatic application backups, export as ZIP and a fresh theme – Redwood – applied to all parts of the tool.  But end-users will also benefit, particularly with a suite of tweaks to APEX reports and a new menu dubbed “mega menu”.  This session will discuss & demonstrate all of the new features that make up APEX 20.1 and how they apply to both developers as well as end users.

Part 3: You’re At 18, Going to 19: Standing Pat on Oracle Database 19c in 2020 and Beyond

            11:00 AM – 12:00 PM CST

You’re an overwhelmed Oracle DBA, and your organization’s Oracle databases are still moored to Oracle release 12.1.0.2—or even worse, 11.2.0.4—but you can see the writing on the wall: It’s time to upgrade, and soon. Or perhaps you’ve just completed a rather painful upgrade process to 12cR2 or 18c, and after getting your database back to merely performant again, you can’t even think about the next release without a lump in your throat or butterflies in your stomach.

This webinar is the third in a series focused on getting your Oracle environment ready to take advantage of the appropriate database release; it will focus on some excellent reasons to overcome those trepidations: the immense benefits that Oracle Database 19provides, including new multitenant licensing, numerous performance improvements, simpler-than-ever automatic upgrades, and the first steps towards the truly converged database.

This session is designed to help Oracle DBAs, regardless of their level of expertise, to migrate quickly, efficiently, and nearly painlessly to Oracle 19c so they can take immediate advantage of its latest features.

One Less Thing For DBAs to Worry About: Automatic Indexing

            8:00 PM – 9:00 PM CST

You’re a busy Oracle DBA. Your phone rings. It’s your most troublesome user, once again complaining that her query is running slow. You take a quick look at the execution plan, find a possible choice for a new index to improve its performance, and drop it in place: Problem solved.

Or is it? Even an experienced DBA may not immediately realize the impact that new index will have on the performance of dozens of other queries and DML statements.

Finally, there’s a better way: Let the database decide.

This session will show how Automatic Indexing (AI) – one of the newest features of Oracle Database 19c – provides an intriguing alternative to reactive performance tuning methodologies for index creation.

We’ll look at how AIC reacts to a heavy hybrid application workload and then holistically builds, tests, and implements the most appropriate secondary indexes needed to improve database performance.

Part 2: Best 18c New Features: A Painless Transition

            11:00 AM – 12:00 PM CST

This webinar will focus on some of the best 18c new features that should be investigated for use for tuning, applications, and administration. Some of you may only be on 12c (or just moving there). Some of you may be on 12cR2 or 18c already, but haven’t had the time to investigate or implement some of the great features. This session is for you!

The features we’ll cover for 18c are not only central for effective database administration tasks; they’re also the key to helping application developers write better code to leverage built-in efficiencies that 18c provides. In this session, we’ll offer simple examples, such as how to leverage the new PDB Snapshot Carousel, to show the basic functionality of the new features.

We’ll also look ahead at some of the more compelling features of 19c so you’ll be ready to implement them when it’s time to upgrade to that release. Finally, we’ll review lessons we’ve learned when upgrading databases to 18c while simultaneously mitigating the risk of degraded database and application performance after the upgrade is completed.

Some of the key features we’ll cover for 18c will include:

Working with the SGA, SQL*Plus History, and changes to Object Name Sizing
Multiple indexes on the same Colum
            PDB Snapshot Carousel
            Real Time PDB Switchove
            New Split/Merge Partition Online enhancement
In-Memory External Tables for Big Data
            Security Enhancements
19c New Features to look forward to and the future ahead

AN AUTONOMOUS SINGULARITY APPROACHES: FORCE MULTIPLIERS FOR OVERWHELMED DBAS

            by Jim Czuprynski

Autonomous Database Services have expanded well beyond their original scope of heavy analytical workloads (ADW) and hybrid transaction processing / reporting workloads (ATP) to include dedicated Cloud-based instances to eliminate contention between “œnoisy neighbors” in the same region and domain.

This session demonstrates how Oracle DBAs at any skill level can immediately leverage Autonomous resources as force multipliers to free them from most mundane administration tasks so they can concentrate on mastering the new skills required to become an Enterprise Data Architect – the emerging post-DBA role – and shift their focus towards building better enterprise systems in concert with their organization’s application developers, business analysts, and business units.
