DBA 3.0: The Next Evolution

Session ID: 2021DBTCNF-100210

The database administration role as we knew it is dead. DBAs who have been around for decades have become irrelevant in this data driven economy. Developers want autonomous management and executive leaders want to cut costs anyway they can. Join Oracle community experts as we discuss the next evolutionary role of the database administration role and what we must do to adapt and survive in this ever changing dynamic technology driven world. Learn what future skills you need to possess and how you can stay on top of the demand. Discussions will include how technical enhancements to autonomous databases, cloud innovations and what you must learn to survive, how AI and machine learning can impact the database scene and understanding which technologies you need to learn to adapt.

Getting Started with Oracle on Docker

Session ID: 2021DBTCNF-101180

Docker is widely embraced in the developer community but less well known or understood in the database world. Database administrators and developers are beginning to realize how powerful containers are and the speed, flexibility, and portability advantages they offer over virtual guests. This session is a practical course for those curious about or just starting out with Oracle on Docker. Attendees will learn terminology and understand how containers differ from virtual machines, followed by demonstrations of Docker’s speed and versatility. Explore basic commands and examples for building Oracle on Docker and making container databases visible on a network. Discover how to separate and preserve data, share and distribute database images and data, then how to create new databases in seconds (not an exaggeration). The session closes with advice on customizing container environments and a peek into orchestrated builds for multi-database needs posed by Data Guard and Sharding.

APEX Grids: Standardize for Productivity and Sanity

    11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Central

    Karen Cannell

    Karen Cannell

    President of TH Technology

    Oracle ACE Director

APEX Interactive Grids have a myriad of customization options, some declarative, and most via JavaScript APIs. How does one stay sane, organized and consistent with so many options? Standardize! Learn techniques to deliver clean, uniform, customized interactive grids within a single application, or across many developers and many applications across an organization. It’s easier than you think.

We will discuss the importance of standards in grid development, labeling, configuration and customization. We will discuss and demonstrate several options standardize grid features within and across your applications: plugins, common configuration files and CSS classes. Decide upon your grid options, code them once, then include and use everywhere. Better yet, not everyone needs to be a JavaScript expert to implement your standard grid configurations.

10 things every DBA needs to do that has nothing to do with Databases

    3/18/2021 12:30:00 PM – 1:30:00 PM MST

Many DBA’s want to be better DBA’s, and many nonDBA’s want to become DBA’s. Often the primary training for this is in technical topics, memorizing tons of details, or being able to be the first to solve a technical issue. Yet some of the best DBA’s I’ve known over the past 25 years start with “I don’t know”. So what 10 things do you need to to do to be a great DBA that has nothing to do with databases? How you interact with others in writing, reading, communication, talking, presenting, being able to repeat things, and more.

Achieving Extreme Scalability, Availability, Tenancy, and Sovereignty with Sharding

    3/18/2021 3:30:00 PM – 4:30:00 PM MT

Oracle Sharding is a technology for managing multiple, geographically dispersed databases in a shared-nothing architecture. Sharding is often associated with large, complex databases but that need not be the case. Based on Oracle Partitioning technology, sharding is a component of Oracle’s Maximum Availability Architecture and boasts a rapidly growing user base. Its adoption is a result of the many database challenges it solves, including extreme availability, fault isolation, data tenancy, application response and latency, hybrid cloud deployment, migration, and data sovereignty. In this presentation, learn how Oracle’s sharding technology works, its limits, implementation planning, use cases, and features and enhancements planned in Oracle 20c.

    Active session history

    11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Central

    David Kurtz

    David Kurtz

    Oracle ACE Director

This presentation aims to help you use the Active Session History (ASH) repository to investigate performance problems.
Oracle has produced many presentations that explain how ASH works, so this presentation provides only a very brief overview of how ASH works. Instead, it looks at:
    * what information is collected by ASH and stored in the repository
    * where this data can be seen in Enterprise Manager and other delivered reports
    * the practicalities of how to directly query the ASH data to analyse and diagnose a range of performance and other problems.
    * the value of a consolidated AWR/ASH repository
    * the critical importance of application instrumentation

ASH is a licensed enterprise edition feature, but if you don’t have it you might be interested in Simulated ASH.

Better Designed Than Sorry – Let’s Design Our DB Schema

    11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Central

President of the BCOUG (British Columbia Oracle User Group)

Schema design is an important part of any application design. It can affect performance, the development process and even your SQL queries.
Thinking about design in advance is very important as design is not something we can easily change down the road.
Yet, sometimes we get fixated on a specific design without thoroughly considering other, potentially better, options.

In this session I hope to challenge your design mindset by discussing a few design challenges and a few ways to solve them.
What are the implications of each solution? Which way is the best? Is there even a “best” way to solve these cases?
